Noa Lang sustained a partial amputation to a finger after colliding with an advertising hoarding at Anfield, overshadowing Liverpool’s Champions League comeback against Galatasaray.

Second-half goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, Hugo Ekitike, Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah turned the tie and sent the hosts into the quarter-finals. Galatasaray said in a post that he suffered a severe cut to his right thumb and was due to undergo surgery in Liverpool within hours, with their medical staff present.

The injury occurred as Lang tried to shield the ball to keep it in play. The ball crossed the byline and, attempting to stop his momentum, he placed his right hand on the pitchside advertising.

He went down immediately and received several minutes of treatment, including oxygen, before being taken off on a stretcher and transported straight to hospital.

The win brought a bittersweet end to the night at Anfield, with concern centred on Lang’s condition. A formal medical update is awaited on the Dutch player.
