England beat Norway 2-1 after extra time in the World Cup quarter-final on Saturday, Jude Bellingham scoring both as Erling Haaland was contained.

L'Équipe notes Bellingham earned a 9 for a tireless, tactically astute display, switching roles as Thomas Tuchel adjusted, having already gone close on 19 and 90+6.

Andreas Schjelderup had put Norway ahead on 36 with a speculative cross-shot that went in off the post. Bellingham levelled on 45+2 after Elliot Anderson sparked the move, then struck on 93 when Orjan Nyland spilled Anderson’s dipping effort.

The new Manchester City midfielder steadied England after Declan Rice was withdrawn at half-time due to a virus, and he recovered nine balls. Jordan Pickford impressed again, denying Martin Ödegaard on 40, Haaland on 53 and Antonio Nusa on 85, then producing a double save from Djed Spence and Bukayo Saka on 109.

Nyland endured a difficult night, nervous with his feet at 90 and culpable for England’s second despite a later double stop. Haaland, on 7 goals before this tie, managed only two tame headers on 36 and 53 and was replaced by Jørgen Strand-Larsen on 106.

Alexander Sørloth struggled on the right, shooting just over on 39 and wasting a fine counter on 45, before Oscar Bobb came on at 68 and had a penalty overturned by VAR on 101. Nusa replaced Schjelderup on 67 but made little impact, while Noni Madueke was withdrawn at the interval after an erratic first half despite two useful crosses on 23 and 44.
