One boss has been ruled out of becoming the new Sheffield United manager, amid the Blades preparing to part ways with Chris Wilder.

Wilder had Sheffield United well on course for automatic promotion from the Championship this season before a late form wobble saw Leeds United and Burnley take the top two spots.

Sheffield United still reached the playoff final, but were edged out by Sunderland and have another year in the second tier to tackle.

They will tackle it without Wilder though as he is set to leave Bramall Lane this week, according to journalist Andy Giddings.

Former Wolves boss Gary O’Neil has been strongly linked with the job, but the next Blades boss is ‘not thought to be’ the successor to Wilder.

O’Neil was lauded for his work at Wolves prior to being replaced at Molineux and his stock in the game remains high.

He will not though be dropping into the Championship with Sheffield United and all eyes will be on who the Blades do appoint.

Following Wilder will be seen as a tough ask and the next boss will be expected to get Sheffield United promoted at the first time of asking.

Wilder is currently on his second spell in charge of Sheffield United.

He had stints at Middlesbrough and Watford after leaving Bramall Lane the first time, but struggled to make a big impression.

The 57-year-old is not likely to want to be out of the game for long and he will likely not lack suitors given what he produced at Sheffield United.

The Blades finished with 90 points in the Championship this season, which was ten points fewer than both of the top two.

It was also 14 more points than Sunderland, who went up at Sheffield United’s expense.
