Nottingham Forest are set to sign Xaver Schlager on a free transfer after his RB Leipzig exit. According to NY Times, the 28-year-old will agree a two-year contract with an option for a further 12 months.

He is due to undergo a medical in Nottingham this week, then join pre-season for the club’s training camp in Portugal. Leipzig had sought to extend his deal before he left.

Schlager served as Leipzig vice-captain and made 108 appearances after arriving from Wolfsburg in 2022. He is a key Austria international, starting all four of their World Cup matches before a round-of-32 exit.

Forest have sold Elliot Anderson to Manchester City in a £116million ($155m) move and had looked at Tottenham Hotspur’s Lucas Bergvall as a possible replacement. Schlager will add to a midfield group featuring Ibrahim Sangare, Nicolas Dominguez, Ryan Yates, Morgan Gibbs-White and James McAtee.

He is in line to be Forest’s first summer arrival and the first signing under new head coach Oliver Glasner. The Austrian signed a three-year deal to replace Vitor Pereira earlier this month after leaving Crystal Palace at the end of the 2025-26 season.

The Athletic reports that Glasner, like Pereira, will be involved in recruitment, with a right-back, a central defender and a central midfielder previously on the agenda. Schlager came through Red Bull Salzburg’s academy, then joined Wolfsburg in 2019 during Glasner’s first season, and has 55 Austria caps plus 150 Bundesliga appearances for Wolfsburg and Leipzig.
