Nuno Espirito Santo has confirmed that Lucas Paqueta will play for West Ham United this weekend when he returns from his suspension.
The midfielder served a one-match ban after receiving two bookings for dissent during the Hammer’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at the London Stadium on Sunday.
Paqueta then took to social media to say he is still being penalised and affected by accusations of spot-fixing offences, for which he was found not guilty by an independent regulatory commission.
“It’s ridiculous to have your life and career affected for two years without any psychological support from the federation,” he posted on X.
“Perhaps this ridiculous behaviour is just a reflection of everything I’ve had to endure and, it seems, have to continue enduring! I’m sorry if I’m not perfect.”
Earlier this week Nuno revealed that Paqueta apologised to the team for his behaviour and added that the player is “suffering”, “disappointed and upset”. Despite his personal difficulties, the West Ham manager says Paqueta will come straight back into the fold when they travel to Brighton this Sunday.
“Yes. He is going to play,” the Portuguese coach said during Friday’s pre-match press conference.
“I already spoke about that. It is in the past. I am positive it will not happen again because he personally admitted his mistake. We spoke about it in the dressing room. I am positive it is over and it will not be repeated.”
West Ham have only lost one of their last five matches in the Premier League, but find themselves in the bottom three following Leeds United’s shock win over Chelsea in midweek.
“We cannot avoid it. It is a reality. We have to face it. We are fighting for survival. We cannot hide it. The results of other teams we cannot control. It is up to us.”
