Bayer Leverkusen 2-7 Paris Saint-Germain

The most eye-catching scoreline of Tuesday’s Champions League action came in Germany, where Bayer Leverkusen’s match with Paris Saint-Germain yielded nine goals, two penalties and a sending off for each side in the first half.

Ultimately the reigning European champions’ class prevailed as PSG recorded an impressive victory, with Portugal left-back Nuno Mendes once again the talk of the match following another stunning display which included a goal and an assist. Midfielder Vitinha also scored and set up Mendes’ goal, making it a memorable night for the Seleção duo.

Mendes’ first major contribution came in the 7th minute when he played a short corner before receiving the ball back and crossing brilliantly for defender William Pacho to nod PSG ahead. By half time the match had taken a chaotic turn, with ex-Benfica defender Alex Grimaldo missing a penalty for Leverkusen and both sides having a player sent off, before Leverkusen equalised through another penalty by Aleix Garcia, only for PSG to score three times before the break through Desire Doue (2) and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to lead 4-1.

The game was made safe on 50 minutes when Vitinha played Mendes through for the former Sporting man to finish with typical aplomb. Garcia pulled another back for Leverkusen, but recently-crowned Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele emerged from the bench to make it 6-2 for the visitors, ahead of Vitinha rounding off the scoring with a precise low shot from distance in the final minute.

Mendes was named Player of the Match yet again in the Champions League, with his record in this year’s competition a ridiculous two goals and two assists from three matches played. Striker Gonçalo Ramos was an unused substitute, while João Neves is still missing with a muscle injury.
