For the first time since 2023, New York City FC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC battled it out in Major League Soccer. While the Pigeons were desperate to reverse their recent misfortunes after losing to Inter Miami CF and the draw with St. Louis City SC, the likelihood was slim. Additionally, the Boys in Blue were without their captain and star defender, Thiago Martins. While they played better than expected, they still lost 2-0.
As mentioned, on paper and based on the recent matches, it was unlikely that NYCFC would win. That is not to say they are not a great team. Rather, Vancouver is just ahead of them at this time and one of the top sides in MLS. After all, there is a reason why they were in the MLS Cup last year.
It did not help that Martins was not available, but there was no question that the depth on the bench was hurt as well. The Pigeons were without six players, but the good news was that Malachi Jones was finally back after missing almost two years. He was substituted on in the 78th minute, and it was lovely to see.
But NYCFC knew they were facing a team that could easily be a contender for the MLS Cup in 2026. Before the fixture, the Whitecaps had 17 goals in their first six matches, which is the most in their club history, and the Bronx side had 14. Plus, the quality was slightly better for the home team.
In fact, in the first minute of the match, Vancouver had a chance to score via a free header. However, they did not capitalize at the time. But NYCFC’s defense was working in overdrive from the starting minute by constantly having to force corner kicks, intervene on passes, and sometimes make tactical fouls.
It felt like the home side was trying to beat down the visitors, for they had 14 shots in the first half alone and 23 in total. Despite some solid play from the Pigeons, it was only a matter of time before the first goal, and with NYCFC not having a shot on target, it was not shocking that Vancouver scored first.
It began with a perfectly placed free kick from Sebastian Berhalter, which sent the ball to Mathías Laborda, who was running toward the goal. Raul Gustavo, who was in for Martins, could not make contact and clear the ball. As such, Laborda lifted his leg and directed the ball beyond Matt Freese in the 45th minute.
The Whitecaps have been incredible with free kicks, so the fact that NYCFC kept on giving them up was quite concerning. Of course, what led to the goal was a mistake. Tayvon Gray had a throw-in, and he gave the ball to Keaton Parks. But Vancouver immediately pressured the ball away, and that led the Queens team to commit the foul. If Gray had given the ball to someone else and gone away from their half, that goal might not have happened.
As known by the total number of shots for the home side, NYCFC had to continue defending throughout the entire 90 minutes. That was not to say they were not without any attack. They had sequences and plenty of shots blocked, but were held without a goal on target until the 60th minute. They were stronger in the second half, for they had just three shots in the first, but nine in the second.
There was an opportunity to even threaten Vancouver’s goal in the 9th minute. NYCFC stole the ball by utilizing a high press, and Nicolás Fernández Mercau had the ball go right to him, with goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka on his side. The Argentine could not control it and forced the ball out of play.
Then, there were the chances in the 59th and 60 minute, where solid shots from Hannes Wolf and Aiden O’Neill were blocked, and a shot by the Australian after was saved.
In the 69th minute, Talles Magno had a 1 v 1 chance where, if he had maneuvered himself to his right or left, he could have gone around Takaoka. Alas, the keeper got to the ball and cleared it before the Brazilian could try to capitalize.
Really, the game was full of missed chances to score. NYCFC had some good plays, and Freese cleaned up many of the defensive mistakes, keeping the Boys in Blue in the game. He had eight saves, including some where he had to react quickly. The save in the 35th minute against Brian White was critical, for he dropped to the ground like he was double-speed, protecting his goal with force.
Yet, Freese's performance was wasted, for the Whitecaps added another goal before the end of the game. Brian White had a header that was perfection wrapped in a ball. There was nothing the goalkeeper could do.
Sadly, the scoring issues were loud in the match, and that is why NYCFC is walking away without even a point. The performance was stronger than expected, and Vancouver did not dominate as they did in some of their other games. Still, the Boys in Blue have not won in their last three matches, and concerns are starting to grow.
