For almost a year, Christian McFarlane was expected to leave New York City FC for Manchester City FC. It was thought he would leave in January 2025 but there were questions about whether he would leave over the summer. Nevertheless, the summer came and went, and McFarlane completed the season with the Bronx side.

The young Homegrown player's future was subsequently up in the air. Nobody knew whether he would definitely leave this January, and there were questions about his future. However, reports basically confirmed the left-back would be on his way out while NYCFC was transparent about him seeking a possible move.

Therefore, supporters and the rest of Major League Soccer knew the announcement was coming. Finally, it was made on Monday.

Christian McFarlane has moved from NYCFC to Manchester

NYCFC officially announced that McFarlane is leaving the club for sister club Manchester City. The 18-year-old joins the Premier League team after many years with the Bronx side. He joined the academy at 11 and subsequently moved up through the ranks, finally making his first-team debut last year. While many would have loved to see him play more often, former head coach Nick Cushing ultimately chose a healthy Kevin O'Toole to start over the young star.

It would have been great if McFarlane could have had at least one year to shine bright for NYCFC, but he will not even return on loan. So for now, fans will have to say goodbye to him. At the very least, he played more minutes than Joe Scally did before making the jump to Europe.

Plus, this is a transfer fans can be excited about. McFarlane is a talented player who could eventually succeed in Europe. He deserves this move, and if he does well, he will be another successful NYCFC academy player in a top league.

Although, it is unknown at this time whether Manchester will send him out on loan or start him with an academy team, more than likely the Elite Development Squad. Still, the move is one everyone can be proud of, and Sporting Director David Lee expressed that to newyorkcityfc.com.

"We are incredibly proud to see Christian reach this incredible milestone in his career," said Lee. "He’s a player who has come all the way through our academy system, continued his development with New York City FC II in MLS NEXT Pro, and ultimately earned his place in our first team. For Christian now to have the opportunity to continue his journey at Manchester City, a club at the pinnacle of world football, is a testament to his hard work, talent, and dedication. I can't wait to follow his career and see how well he's going to do in Manchester knowing that he'll give everything he can to reach the highest level he possibly can in football."

Lee's words are entirely true, which is why McFarlane should not be held back by any means. The former NYCFC defender will have a lot of work to do, but there is no doubt that he can be successful, whether with Manchester or elsewhere.
