NYCFC suffers an expected loss to Nashville SC and limps into the needed break

The day has arrived. New York City FC and the rest of Major League Soccer are all playing the final games before the World Cup break this weekend. The Pigeons traveled to Music City to take on Nashville SC for their final match, and there was no question that most fans likely believed they would not win. Hence, the 2-1 loss was an expected outcome.

The reasons for this belief were simple.  For starters, the Boys in Blue were facing the best team in the league.  Then, the injury list was awful, for eight players were unavailable.  This included NYCFC legend Maxi Moralez, who ruptured his ACL in the draw with the New York Red Bulls last weekend.  So, the team was a little thin when it came to depth.

Moreover, it feels like the Bronx side has a dark shadow over them based on the injuries.  While they came back to earn a draw after Moralez’s injury in the Hudson River Derby, they lost the midweek battle with the Columbus Crew in the U.S. Open Cup.  That performance was one of the worst offensive ones of the season.

Then again, it was expected that Nashville would not go so great, either.  NYCFC played slightly better this time around, but still failed to provide a substantial offensive performance, regardless of the result.

NYCFC loses to the best MLS team

As expected, NYCFC was forced to defend from the beginning.  Nashville threatened, but the backline was originally doing their job, protecting Matt Freese and the goal during open play.  But all it took was one set piece for the Pigeons to go down in the 16th minute.  The home side had a corner kick, and the ball was perfectly placed in the box.

Nico Cavallo, who was supposed to be protecting his area, failed to mark Jeison Palacios.  With ease, the Colombian powerfully headed the ball right at Freese, who put his hands out to attempt the stop.  However, the power was too great, and the ball spilled into the back of the net.

Yet, NYCFC was gifted a little bit of a lifeline.  Malachi Jones, who started over Hannes Wolf, was fouled in the box.  Both Reed Baker-Whiting and Bryan Acosta brought the winger down, awarding a penalty to the visitors.  Nicolás Fernández Mercau took the penalty kick and forced the ball into the right-center of the goal in the 23rd minute.  Brian Schwake went the other way and had no chance to make the save.

Right after, the Pigeons were back to their defending.  But they were not without chances.  In the 34th minute, Jones had a wonderful run into the box and passed the ball toward Agustín Ojeda.  The Argentine failed to make contact and likely would have put the shot on target if he did.  But Fernández Mercau swept the ball toward the goal instead, watching it go wide on a missed opportunity.

After halftime, Nashville came out, though, pressuring NYCFC.  There were a few moments when the Pigeons got away with poor defending, but eventually, the home side went ahead again.  Tayvon Gray failed to properly defend this time, and Maxwell Woledzi headed the ball over the right-back.  Once again, for the goal came from a free kick, the Bronx side failed to defend a set piece.

The Music City team continued to dominate, but as the game continued, it was not entirely all NashvilleNYCFC still competed and kept themselves in the match.  Plus, Pascal Jansen’s changes in the second half were influential in their play.  What they needed, though, was someone to have that clinical touch outside of a penalty kick.

Some of the offensive sequences were stronger, but alas, that killer instinct was missing.  Fernández Mercau ultimately was the one who was the most threatening, and he had another chance to score in the 87th minute.  His free kick was stopped, though, and arguably, it was too much right at the Nashville goalkeeper.  He also had a shot in stoppage time that was stopped, but again, right at Schwake.

Now, NYCFC was better compared to the loss in Columbus.  They also kept the match tight based on the 2-1 loss.  But, of course, that is still not good enough for the Boys in Blue.  In addition, there is a question of whether they made it injury-free, for Jones was hurt when he was fouled.  He still played until the 66th minute, but the young player clearly struggled with the pain. To make matters scarier, Wolf, who came on as a sub, spent the final minutes on the sideline.

It has been said often, but thankfully, the long break is coming at the perfect time.  Perhaps fewer injuries, or even a reliable striker, would have led the Pigeons to even leave with a point.  But at this time, fans can only hope that NYCFC will have a better second half of the 2026 season.
