Nypan: I’ve learned a lot in my first season in England

Sverre Nypan says he’s a better footballer now than he was at the start of the 2025/26 season.
The 19-year-old Norwegian joined City last summer and spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Middlesbrough before returning to the CFA in the new year.
Since then, he’s played a starring role for our EDS side while training regularly alongside our first team stars.
A central midfielder with a natural flair and eye for goal, Nypan’s talent is obvious to see.
However, he says it’s in his character on the pitch where he has improved most since arriving in England.
“The mindset and mentality you have is most important and I think I’ve developed the most there. It’s been tough but I’ve also learned a lot,” he said in the latest episode of the Official Man City podcast.
“I didn’t play regularly at Middlesbrough but dealing with that, I’ve learned a lot from and now coming back to training with one of the best teams in the world and trying to do your best, it’s also a good learning experience.
“I feel like I’m much more ready for doing the best I can now and I’m a better footballer than I was last year.”

This may take a few seconds. Press play when it’s ready.
Having made his first team debut for boyhood club Rosenborg at 15 and then picked up his first senior national team cap last October, Nypan has attracted a lot of attention.
While he’s now focused on simply being better every day, the teenager says it took a while to adjust to being in that spotlight.
“It’s difficult but I have worked a lot on it,” he said.
“I think in the start you don’t really understand how big it is and when you hear big teams are looking at your games you don’t really think about it because you don’t really believe it.
“You just play how it is and you try to think you still have nothing to lose, just to go out there and have fun. That’s what you have to try and tell yourself but of course it is difficult.”
With so much hype around him while playing in the Norwegian Eliteserien, Nypan wasn’t short of offers for his next move.
However, he says it was clear very early on that City was the right place for him to develop.
“I felt like the connection was there and they really showed they wanted me a lot. That’s something you like to hear. You want to go to a team that really believes in you,” he said.
“The plan that we made together sounded really nice but just getting the chance to train with the best players in the world, it’s only positive.
“Having Erling here now is helping and it’s nice to feel like a bit of home when you talk to a fellow Norwegian.
“I remember the first time I met them and worked with them was pretty cool because I’ve been a fan and watched City games since I was really young.”
