Javi Fernández made his breakthrough in professional soccer with 1. FC Nürnberg. Now the Bayern talent speaks openly about his loan and his big dream.

Javi Fernández will remain with 1. FC Nürnberg for another year. The 19-year-old was loaned to the Franconian club by FC Bayern and quickly established himself as a key player there during the second half of last season.

In an interview with BILD, Fernández explained in detail why he decided to stay in Nuremberg despite interest from other clubs.

“I just feel that there’s no better place for me right now to improve. FCN has already helped me tremendously to mature as a soccer player and as a person. I’ve become physically stronger and increasingly confident in my play,” said the Spaniard.

For the Bayern talent, the loan is above all a chance to get back on the field regularly after a difficult period. Fernández had just come off a ten-month injury layoff in Munich after sustaining injuries to his ankle and meniscus in quick succession.

“That was really tough. Before that, I was already training regularly with Bayern’s first team and was even allowed to go to the training camp at Tegernsee. That was a dream, and I was hopeful that I could fight my way into a permanent spot on the first team,” explained the midfielder.

Fernández raves about Kane and the rest of the team.

Despite the difficult period, Fernández looks back gratefully on the support he received in Munich. Above all, he says, the people around him and the club helped him through that tough time: “FC Bayern, along with its doctors and coaches, took great care of me. I myself always stayed positive and just kept working. Now I’m a new Javi.”

His time training with the pros was also particularly formative for him. Fernández got a firsthand look at what sets the Bayern stars apart: “It was incredibly educational to see what makes this team so successful. Of course, there are a lot of incredibly talented players like Harry Kane, who seems to never misplace a pass and hits every shot. But the secret is their attitude: You get the feeling they’re fighting for their lives in every training session. Joshua Kimmich impressed me in particular—he’s determined to win every little game—and I want to follow his example.”

The dream of playing for FC Bayern remains

Even during his time in Nuremberg, he’s stayed in close contact with FC Bayern. Fernández emphasized that the record champions continue to closely monitor his development: “Bayern is keeping a close eye on me, especially the loan player coordinators Richard Kitzbichler and Timo Kern. They both check in regularly and visit me from time to time to talk about my situation and my games.”

His contract in Munich runs through 2028. And although his focus is clearly on FCN right now, Fernández makes no secret of the fact that his big dream still lies on Säbener Straße: “Of course, I still dream of playing for Bayern in the Bundesliga and the Champions League someday. But for now, my focus is on Nuremberg.”
