French forward Mathys Tel (20) has admitted his disappointment after being left out of Tottenham Hotspur’s Champions League squad by head coach Thomas Frank in an interview with Le Télégramme. The former Rennes striker joined Spurs permanently this summer for €40m following a successful six-month loan from Bayern Munich, but has not been included on the club’s UEFA list. Instead, Frank opted for Richarlison, Dominic Solanke and Randal Kolo Muani – the latter signed on deadline day.“When you’re not on the list, of course it hurts,” said Tel in an interview with the regional newspaper before facing Serbia with France’s U23 side. “But I stay positive whatever the situation. I’ve worked a lot on the mental side. It’s a disappointment, I would have liked to be there, but it’s the coach’s choice and you can only respect it and work to respond in the best way on the pitch.”Tel had featured in Spurs’ Europa League triumph last May against Manchester United and came off the bench in the UEFA Super Cup defeat to PSG last month, where he missed his spot-kick in the shootout.“I have learned that no matter what the situation, you have to be patient,” continued Tel. “Sometimes there are things you deserve, but you don’t get them in return. So I have gained maturity and experience, and I think that today it has shaped my personality and character.”GFFN | George Boxall
