FC Barcelona announced their starting lineup for the game against Deportivo Alaves just moments ago, with starts being handed to players like Marc Bernal, Marc Casado, and Gerard Martin.
However, there were some notable absences in the squad, one of which was captain and defender Ronald Araujo.
Now, Barcelona have issued a statement confirming the reason for Araujo’s absence, stating that the defender is dealing with a stomach bug.
“First team player Ronald Araujo is out for today’s match against Alaves due to a stomach virus,” the club statement read.
Araujo had come under intense fire after Barcelona’s midweek defeat to Chelsea, where he was sent off in the 44th minute after picking up two yellow cards in a short space of time.
The Uruguayan international was understood to be severely affected by the mistake that cost his team at Stamford Bridge.
Araujo did not train with the team on Thursday and Friday after returning from London, and was eventually ruled out of the game vs Alaves, with the club confirming that it was due to a stomach virus.
