After spending the last two seasons away on loan, Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet has once again departed the club on yet another temporary arrangement, joining Atletico Madrid for the remainder of the season.

“FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid have reached an agreement for the loan of the French defender Clément Lenglet until 30 June 2025. There is no option of a permanent transfer,” the club statement read.

Lenglet spent the last two seasons on loan at Tottenham and Aston Villa in the Premier League. Back at Barça this summer, the 29-year-old featured prominently during pre-season but his continuity at the club was never really a possibility.

After all, Lenglet’s €16 million per year wages made it impossible for the Catalans to keep hold of him in their current financial situation.

But his high salary also made it difficult for the Blaugrana to part ways with him and as such they have extended Lenglet’s contract by another year until 2027 before loaning him out to spread his salary and reduce some financial burden.

Lenglet has signed for Atletico Madrid on a loan deal with there being no option for a permanent purchase at the end of the season.

Los Rojiblancos are expected to cover around €4 million of his wages according to reports, with the rest being borne by Barcelona.
