Official: Benfica deny racism allegations against Gianluca Prestianni after Vinicius incident | OneFootball

SL Benfica have issued a fresh statement defending their player, Gianluca Prestianni, against racism allegations directed towards Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Jr.

The Argentine youngster allegedly hurled racist slurs at the Brazilian during last night’s UEFA Champions League, with the forward informing the referee immediately which led to the game halting for close to ten minutes.

After the match, Vinicius issued a statement confirming the incident, backed by his teammate, Kylian Mbappe.

Benfica, though, have been defiant throughout, initially releasing a short statement subtly accusing Real Madrid players of lying. Now, they have sent out another official communique, wherein the fully defend Prestianni.

Benfica’s statement

While expressing their willingness to collaborate with UEFA, who have launched an investigation into the matter, Benfica reaffirmed their support of the Argentine.

“Sport Lisboa e Benfica views with a spirit of complete collaboration, transparency, openness and a sense of clarity the steps announced today by UEFA, following the alleged case of racism that occurred in the game against Real Madrid,” the statement started.

“The Club reaffirms, clearly and unequivocally, its historical and unwavering commitment to defending the values ​​of equality, respect, and inclusion, which align with the core values ​​of its foundation and which have Eusebio as their greatest symbol.”

Expressing their support to Prestianni, Benfica added:

“Sport Lisboa e Benfica reiterates that it fully supports and believes in the version presented by the player Gianluca Prestianni, whose conduct while serving the Club has always been guided by respect for opponents, institutions, and the principles that define Benfica’s identity. 

“The Club regrets the defamation campaign to which the player has been subjected.”
