Nicolas Jackson has completed a deadline day deal to join Bayern Munich on loan for the season – and possibly permanently.
It was a drama of amazing proportions in the end. A perfect summer mini saga in 3 acts.
To recap: Chelsea sign Jackson. Jackson looks good but raw. Jackson improves but still frustrates. Two players are signed to compete with Jackson. Jackson frustrates again, Jackson gets demoted. Jackson and Chelsea agree he can leave for the right price.
A Bayern bid is accepted last week and Jackson flies on Munich on Saturday to complete his medical and sign the requisite paperwork. But literally as he’s in the air, Liam Delap, one of the players replacing him, does his hamstring in Chelsea’s game against Fulham.
Chelsea try to cancel his loan with option to buy. Jackson stays in Munich. Chelsea sort out a return for Marc Guiu and green light Jackson’s move again earlier today.
Ben Jacobs’ Tweet about the final Nicolas Jackson fee.
What’s amazing about the whole thing is that the terms changed, apparently in Chelsea’s favour. Ben Jacobs is reporting a €16.5m loan fee, up from €15m in the previous agreement. And a €65m conditional obligation based on appearances – we don’t know what it was before. It will be very interesting to work out what that number of appearances is, and we don’t expect it will take long to leak.
It leaves Chelsea with Joao Pedro, an injured Delap and Guiu as their strike force for the season. One can’t help but feel that’s a little thin. But the deal for Jackson was just too good to turn down it seems, and if the gamble on JP delivering pays off, nobody will be complaining.
