Eintracht Frankfurt have announced that they have parted ways with head coach Dino Toppmöller following their draw with Werder Bremen on Friday night.
Following a meeting after the 3-3 draw, it was decided that the head coach and the club would part ways.
On leaving Frankfurt, Toppmöller said:
“I would have loved to continue working with this team and facing the challenges ahead. But I accept the decision. I went to Eintracht every day with great passion and joy, and regardless of the current unsatisfactory situation, which undoubtedly exists, I am proud of what we have achieved together over the past two and a half years. It’s a shame that we can’t continue together. Thank you to everyone who believed in me, who gave me this opportunity, who placed their trust in me for so long. Thank you to all the players, the entire coaching and support staff, the board, and all the employees at the club. It has been an honor. I wish Eintracht calmer and, above all, successful times.”
The club has announced that under-21 head coach Dennis Schmitt, as well as under-19 coach Alexander Meier, will be in interim charge. Bild reports that they will be in charge of the Champions League game against Qarabag in midweek, and a new permanent head coach will be in charge for next weekend against Hoffenheim.
While Toppmöller was able to take die Adler into the Champions League through their league positioning, this season, and the past three games, have highlighted how poor defensively they have been. Frankfurt have the joint-worst defence in the league, and in their opening three games of the year, they have conceded nine goals.
Considering Frankfurt are still in the Champions League, they can attract a good calibre of head coach. Some of the current available options are Marco Rose, Edin Terzic or Roger Schmidt. While there are other former Bundesliga head coaches, such as Sandro Wagner, Bo Svensson and Adi Hütter.
