RB Leipzig’s 0-0 draw with Werder Bremen on Matchday 33 confirms that they will not be playing Champions League football next season.
The best Leipzig can finish is fifth, which would secure European football. However, they need results to go their way on the final day of the season; if not, they are currently looking at missing out on European football altogether next season.
This will be the second time ever that Leipzig will have missed out on Champions League football. The last time this happened was in 2017/18 when they finished sixth.
Leipzig has rotted this season for a while. They kept Marco Rose in charge for too long, and then, when he was replaced, it was too late, and Zsolt Löw could not do anything to turn the team around. This summer, there will be a lot of change for Leipzig, with Xavi Simons and Benjamin Seško likely to leave.
Freiburg, on the other hand, can confirm Champions League football if Borussia Dortmund loses to Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday. If Dortmund do avoid defeat, the race for the final Champions League spot will go down to the final day with Freiburg playing Eintracht Frankfurt and Dortmund facing already relegated Holstein Kiel.
