Olympique de Marseille have announced that Roberto De Zerbi has left his position as first-team head coach by mutual consent, bringing an end to his 18-month tenure at the Vélodrome. In an official communiqué released on Wednesday, the club confirmed that a meeting involving owner Frank McCourt, president Pablo Longoria, with sporting director Medhi Benatia and De Zerbi himself resulted in the decision to enact a managerial change. OM described the move as a “difficult” but collective choice, taken after thorough reflection.
The statement thanked De Zerbi for his “investment, commitment and professionalism” during his time in charge. The Italian guided Marseille to a second-place finish in the 2024/25 campaign, qualifying the club for the Champions League for the first time since 2022.Les Olympiens have shown chronic inconsistency since the turn of the year and were knocked out of the Champions League in January by Brugge sandwiched between a downturn of results in Ligue 1. De Zerbi was close to leaving the club then, but opted to continue with the club still fighting for Champions League qualification and in the quarter-finals of the Coupe de France. Yet a 5-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain came as the straw that finally broke the camel’s back, as the Italian entered talks to depart the club just days following.
