Ørjan Nyland returns to RB Leipzig after three years to sign a contract until 2028. The Norwegian shot-stopper is a replacement for the long-serving goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi, who completed his move to Villarreal yesterday after spending 11 years with Leipzig.
Since Nyland's contract expired at Sevilla, the transfer went through as a free agent. The 1.92m-tall goalkeeper has only made three appearances for Leipzig during the 2022/23 season before leaving for Sevilla. He also had a previous stint in Germany with Ingolstadt before his time with Aston Villa.
Maarten Vandevoordt is expected to be the starting goalkeeper, while Nyland would provide competition after his successful World Cup campaign with Norway. The 35-year-old was among the top performers when they secured a famous win over Brazil to reach the quarter-final.
RB Leipzig confirmed Nyland will also complete his first training session with the team in Saalfelden on Tuesday morning.
“With Ørjan (Nyland), we're gaining a very experienced goalkeeper whom we already know very well as a player and as a person. Even during his initial time with us, he demonstrated that he's an absolute team player, a reliable professional, and always ready to take on responsibility.” said managing director of sport, Marcel Schäfer.
