After passing his medical yesterday, Borussia Dortmund striker Youssoufa Moukoko’s move to FC Copenhagen has officially been finalized. The German phenom hopes to put a highly regrettable chapter in his young career behind him via a fresh start with the Danish champions. The 20-year-old moves north on a €5m transfer fee that could rise to €7m via performance bonuses.
Few would have envisioned that the Moukoko’s career would feature such a twist. Once touted as Germany’s next top striker and valued at €30m for over a full calendar year between November 2022 and December 2023, Moukoko is now leaving Dortmund for a pittance. Kicker does report that Dortmund have secured a re-sale fee in the event Copenhagen end up selling Moukoko in the future
BVB sporting executives Sebastian Kehl and Lars Ricken made clear that they still wished their former academy man all the best in their public statements. Ideally, Moukoko will receive a chance to revive his career under head coach Jacob Neestrup; a coach also heavily courted by Bundesliga clubs this summer.
“Youssoufa is a very special player for us,” Ricken noted. “He played a key role in winning titles in the youth ranks and shaped our academy for years with the professional attitude he demonstrated even at a young age. We wish him a successful new start in Copenhagen and a sporting environment that will enable him to fully exploit his undoubted potential.“
“His development has recently stalled,” Kehl added. “Everyone involved certainly would have wished for a different outcome.”
“There are two hearts beating in my chest right now,” Moukoko said in his own statement. “It’s not easy to say goodbye to a club like BVB, because this club, my teammates, coaches, supporters, and the amazing fans will always mean a lot to me. On the other hand, it’s time to start afresh in a new place with optimism and a lot of ambition. FC Copenhagen offers me every opportunity to do so.”
