Hamburg have officially confirmed the reported on capture of Basel winger Philip Otele on loan. The Nigerian journeyman heads to the Bundesliga having already played in Switzerland, Lithuania, Romania, and the U.A.E.

Otele’s signing concluded an absolute blockbuster end to the transfer window from HSV. Otele is joined by fellow winger Albert Grøbaek of Denmark. Just prior to Otele’s introduction, Hamburg also confirmed the early loan recall of promising young German striker Otto Stange.

Statements on Philip Otele’s signing

At the end of the transfer window, we are gaining another player in Philip who will make our offense more versatile and broader,” Club CFO and interim sporting director Dr. Eric Huwer noted in a club statement. “Claus [Costa] and his team are thus rounding off a highly intensive transfer period on the acquisition side, in which we were able to successfully fill four positions and reduce the squad as desired.”

Philip is a textbook winger,” Costa himself said. “He brings a high level of creativity and goal-scoring threat to the team. He is very bold with the ball and often looks for the direct route to goal with his dribbling. What’s more, Philip is in good form and full of energy.

It’s a proud moment for me,” Otele said in his first club statement. “I didn’t really need convincing because HSV and the Volksparkstadion are huge. I can’t wait to get started.
