Oh Hyeon-gyu on his homesickness struggles at Celtic

Oh Hyeon-gyu has revealed he struggled with homesickness during his spell at Celtic…

The South Korean forward has since flourished following his departure from Celtic, earning praise for his performances at Genk before securing a move to Besiktas after a proposed £28 million transfer to Stuttgart failed to materialise in the summer.

His current success marks a stark contrast to his time in Glasgow, where glimpses of his potential were evident but regular opportunities proved limited.

Reflecting on that period with the Hoops, Oh acknowledged the challenges he faced and revealed that he often turned to a specific song as a source of comfort.

Speaking via JTBC, Oh said: “When I was at Celtic, there was a song I used to listen to quite often, especially when things got a bit tough.

“That was the song Take Me Home, Country Roads. I listened to a lot. It gave me some comfort, and it often made me think about how much I wanted to go home. A lot, back then.

“And here I am, on my first trip to Europe all by myself. But listening to that music has really given me a boost, so I’d love for everyone to hear that song if I ever organise a gathering or make an impact in LA. I haven’t really felt like listening to it lately.”

Meanwhile, Callum McGregor has conceded that Celtic’s 2-0 defeat to Dundee United at Tannadice at the weekend represented the poorest display of the Martin O’Neill’s two stints in charge this season.

Speaking via Daily Record, CalMac said: “Over the two spells with Martin [O’Neill] and Shaun [Maloney], I think that’s probably the worst that we’ve been. We’ve had a pretty bad day and we have to accept that. The players have been really, really good over the two spells.”

“We haven’t dropped too many points. When you come here, it’s difficult. But like I said, I think we have to look at ourselves. We never did enough.”

“We never really created that many chances either. So, it’s one we have to take on the chin. Now we’ve obviously got a wee break and go away, dissect it.”
