The Bundesliga is back this weekend with matchday 3 of the new season. 1. FSV Mainz 05 host RB Leipzig on Saturday at 15:30 CEST. The Red Bulls will be hoping to record their second win of the season, while the 05ers are yet to manage a victory in 2025/26, collecting just a solitary point from the opening two matchdays.
RBL's head coach has had great success against Mainz in the past and a Mainz-born Red Bull could feature at his old home ground.
Here are the pre-match facts ahead of #M05RBL.
Our recent record against Mainz 05 isn't the best. We've recorded just one win in our last six meetings with the 05ers, though that did come on our last trip to the Mewa Arena in October 2024. Xavi and Willi Orban scored the goals in a 2-0 win there last season.
Thankfully for us, head coach Ole Werner has enjoyed playing Mainz in recent times, winning each of his last four Bundesliga games against them. Let's hope he can make it five in a row this weekend!
Our right-back Ridle Baku will return home on Saturday. Born in Mainz, Ridle played for FSV for 13 years (2007 to 2020), making 50 Bundesliga appearances and scoring three goals.
Ridle has won an impressive 76% of his duels this season, the best rate of anyone to play at least half of the possible minutes in the Bundesliga in 2025/26.
Danish striker Conrad Harder joined the club just before the transfer window shut. Our new striker played 738 minutes for Sporting in 2024/25, having a direct hand in 10 goals (5 goals, 5 assists). Only his teammate Viktor Gyökeres (61 minutes) required less time on average for a goal involvement than Harder (74 minutes) across the league.
Conrad could make his RBL debut on Saturday. Together with Rômulo, he forms a new-look strike force after the departure of Benjamin Sesko and Lois Openda.
Both RBL and our next opponents are currently on a barren run, though Mainz's is a lot longer. RB Leipzig are a without a goal in each of their last three Bundesliga away games.
Mainz are without a win in each of their last six Bundesliga home games. After a run of five straight draws, they were beaten 1-0 by 1. FC Köln on the opening weekend of this season. This is the third-longest wait for a home win in FSV's top-flight history.
Mainz 05 lost prolific goalscorer Jonathan Burkardt over the summer to Eintracht Frankfurt. He was replaced by Benedict Hollerbach from 1. FC Union Berlin and FSV then also added Danish forward William Böving from Sturm Graz at the end of the window to bolster their attack.
The club have looked to build a squad with more depth this season after they qualified for the league phase of the UEFA Conference League via the play-offs.
Mainz's key player is Nadiem Amiri. The Germany international, who scored in the win over Northern Ireland this week, has netted one goal in four of FSV's five competitive games this season. The midfielder has therefore scored more goals (4) than the rest of his teammates put together (3).
