Oliver Glasner has cast Nottingham Forest’s pre-season as the start of a climb, with attention fixed on steady steps rather than the summit.

According to Nottingham Post, the head coach says the squad are at base camp and must work together to make progress.

His first week was spent Trentside, then a 12-day camp in Portugal has helped him set out clear demands, reinforced with video sessions in the Algarve heat.

There have been glimpses already. Training patterns fed both goals against Notts County, and Jair Cunha’s burst teed up Igor Jesus for the opener in a 3-0 win over Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday.

Glasner was vocal on the touchline, with instructions flying, and Ola Aina was among those frequently corrected. The graft now is intended to pay off later.

He believes most work remains without the ball. Despite two clean sheets and few chances allowed, he feels habits still need changing and consistency must improve after only one and a half training sessions and a long video meeting.

Talk has centred on a shift to a three-man defence, yet Glasner is placing as much weight on principles as on formations. The mood is upbeat, with anticipation shaped by his record of winning silverware, including at Crystal Palace.

For the players it is a clean slate. Zach Abbott views pre-season as a chance to impress and develop, while Taiwo Awoniyi expects a good season and Ryan Yates senses a special feeling under the new head coach.
