Selhurst Park offered a restrained farewell to Oliver Glasner, the most successful manager in Crystal Palace’s history, with eyes already on Wednesday’s UEFA Conference League final in Leipzig against Rayo Vallecano.
According to NY Times, chants for his red and blue army filled the ground as chairman Steve Parish asked Arsenal’s travelling support to give Palace five minutes for their own moment, a request largely observed.
Parish presented a small replica FA Cup to mark last May’s triumph, the club’s first major trophy, and hailed the Community Shield, a European tour and a 13th straight Premier League season.
Home form has bitten, only four league wins at Selhurst, and winter friction over Glasner’s emotional outbursts and perceived criticism eased as the European run gathered pace.
The match itself mattered little, with Glasner settling on his XI at 8pm the night before as he weighed rhythm against risk and made changes to minimise strain.
Jean-Philippe Mateta pulled a goal back and Yeremy Pino saw a late finish ruled out for offside, denying an on-pitch crescendo.
Midfielder Adam Wharton’s ankle will be assessed on Monday.
Addressing supporters, Glasner said he thought the best day could still be to come in Leipzig, stressed the belief shared between team and fans, and said they would go for a third trophy. He added that he arrived a stranger and now feels like a south Londoner. Whatever happens in Germany, this was a fitting Selhurst send-off.
