Olivier Giroud, 39, is expected to extend his stay at Lille, with discussions close to a positive conclusion. Barring a late twist, he is likely to celebrate his 40th birthday on 30 September in a Lille shirt.

Speaking to RMC on Monday, club president Olivier Létang said the striker still has the fire and desire, and that the club remain convinced he can contribute.

The forward has been Lille’s leading scorer this season with 11 goals in 44 appearances, including seven in Ligue 1 and four in the Europa League. His return to France has worked and both parties are aligned on continuing together.

Earlier this year, Giroud said turning 40 mattered to him, adding that any decision would be taken with his wife and family. He suggested he would sit down with Létang if he felt he could still bring something and the club were satisfied.

No contract has been signed yet, but the all-time leading scorer for France with 57 goals, one ahead of Kylian Mbappé, is in line for a one-year extension to pursue the 16th European campaign of his career. He joined LOSC on a one-year deal in July 2025 after a spell in Los Angeles in MLS. Lille are also working on potential renewals for Aïssa Mandi, Nabil Bentaleb and Thomas Meunier, whose deals expire on 30 June.
