Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush has been ruled out of Sunday’s Manchester derby after sustaining a knee injury while on international duty with Egypt.

The 26-year-old was withdrawn just nine minutes into Egypt’s World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou on Tuesday evening. He had initially played on after receiving treatment for a heavy challenge but was eventually replaced by Osama Faisal.

City confirmed today that Marmoush had undergone initial scans in Egypt which revealed ligament bruising. He will now return to Manchester for further tests and to begin his rehabilitation.

The club said in a statement: “Initial results on a scan performed in Egypt indicate he will not be available for the Manchester derby on Sunday, and he will now return to Manchester for more assessment and to begin his rehabilitation. Everyone at City wishes Omar a speedy recovery.”

The Egyptian medical team also confirmed the diagnosis, with national doctor Mohamed Abou El-Ela stating that the forward had suffered “knee ligament bruising” following the incident.

Marmoush had played an hour in Egypt’s 2-0 win over Ethiopia four days earlier, scoring the second goal, but his latest setback leaves Pep Guardiola short of attacking options for the visit of Manchester United.

Signed from Eintracht Frankfurt for £59 million in January, Marmoush has featured three times in the Premier League this season, starting against Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion. He has scored eight goals in 28 appearances since joining the club.

His absence adds to a growing injury list for City. Summer arrival Rayan Cherki is sidelined for two months with a hamstring problem, while Phil Foden, Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol all missed matches before the international break.

Guardiola now faces a major selection test as City prepare for one of the biggest fixtures of their season. With the champions looking to bounce back from defeats against Brighton and Tottenham before the break, losing Marmoush is another untimely blow.

City will continue to monitor his condition in the coming days, but the forward is expected to miss several weeks of action.
