Rasmus Hojlund has revealed that he fell out of love with football while playing for Manchester United last season.

The forward is currently spending the campaign on loan with Napoli, after which he is expected to sign for the club permanently following three years on United’s books.

Rasmus Hojlund reflects on Red Devils woes

Opening up on his struggles at Old Trafford prior to his summer move to Naples, he told TV2: “It felt like it was over for me at one point.

“Here at Napoli, I’ve rediscovered my love for football. People even back in Denmark were writing me off, but I never stopped believing.”

It came amid a hugely underwhelming term for Hojlund – one that saw him record only four Premier League goals in 32 appearances.

Such substandard form prompted INEOS to search for replacements last year, and they eventually settled on RB Leipzig starlet Benjamin Sesko, who has since surpassed Hojlund’s 2024/2025 return with seven games left to play.

How Hojlund is faring for Napoli

Over in Italy, the Danish international has been able to revive his stagnant situation under Antonio Conte.

Hojlund has scored 10 Serie A goals and contributed a further two assists, while he also found the back of the net three times in the Champions League and once in the Supercoppa Italiana – a competition that Napoli went on to win – semi-final against AC Milan.

The reigning Scudetto winners are currently playing catch-up in the title race in their remaining matches, as they sit third-placed and seven points behind leaders Inter Milan.

Napoli’s plan to sign Hojlund

Either way, Napoli are ready to add Hojlund to Conte’s ranks permanently at the end of the season.

A buy clause worth £38 million was included in the player’s terms when he made the switch on September 1, which would become an obligation if Napoli qualified for the UCL by May.

However, they are keen to complete the deal irrespective of where they finish in the table, meaning Hojlund’s time in M16 will come to an end after three years.
