Liverpool’s Incredible Start: Caution in the Face of Glory

Bouncing everywhere at the moment, aren’t we? Liverpool have had a remarkable start to the 2024/25 Premier League season, and there’s no denying the excitement among fans. As of November 9th, they sit top of the league with 28 points after 11 matches, having won 9 games, drawn 1, and lost just 1. This is their best start since the 2019/20 season, where they accumulated 31 points after 11 games. However, in the world of football, things can change quickly, and we must be careful not to get too carried away with what is, at present, an extraordinary start.

Contextualising Liverpool’s Position

It’s a thrilling time for Liverpool supporters, but it is essential to remember that the season is long and filled with unpredictability. While they are currently at the summit of the Premier League, it’s important to note that Manchester City, who are five points behind with 23 points, have only lost 2 matches compared to Liverpool’s single defeat. In this league, such small margins can make all the difference, and it’s a reminder of the fierce competition that lies ahead. City aways come strong second half.

The Premier League is renowned for its volatility, with any club capable of winning on any given matchday. As Liverpool push forward with their impressive form, it’s worth considering that their next few fixtures could change everything. There are tough matches ahead, including a high-stakes encounter against Manchester City and an away trip to a rejuvenated Newcastle United. The Merseyside derby also looms large, and these games have the potential to significantly alter the league’s landscape.

Opta Supercomputer Projections: The Odds Now

What’s even more telling about the Reds’ rise is the shift in the Opta supercomputer’s Premier League title projections. At the beginning of the season, Liverpool were given just a 5.1% chance of winning the title. However, fast forward to November 9th, and the odds have changed dramatically. The supercomputer now gives Liverpool a 59.3% chance of claiming the Premier League crown, compared to 82.2% for Manchester City back in August, which has now dropped to 36.2%. Arsenal, who also looked strong early on, are now projected at just 4.1%. This dramatic shift shows just how much confidence has surged in Liverpool’s title challenge. An pts supercomputer shouldn’t define a mood though, whatever it is.

Not Everything is Set in Stone

Despite this optimism, we cannot ignore the potential obstacles ahead. There is still a lot of football to be played, and with key fixtures against rivals Manchester City and Newcastle, anything can happen. Injuries will also play a major role, with Liverpool’s defence potentially affected by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s recent injury. The full extent of his condition has yet to be diagnosed, which adds an element of uncertainty to Liverpool’s future matches.

One thing that can be said for sure is that Liverpool are not getting ahead of themselves. The usual rhetoric of “one game at a time” remains the focus, and it’s this mentality that has served them so well in the past. After the 2-0 victory over Aston Villa, midfielder Alexis Mac Allister whose usually level-headed response and a seasoned professional responded “If you asked me before the start of the season, I wouldn’t say we were candidates [for the league], but now we are.”

Still in the Balance

As the league table stands right now, Liverpool’s position is undeniably impressive, but we are still in the early stages of the campaign. There are so many factors at play, and a sudden dip in form or injury crisis could easily derail their title hopes. That said, their early-season form and the way they have approached this campaign are encouraging signs. It’s clear they mean business, but it’s equally clear that they understand the long road ahead. They are passing every test that comes their way just now. However, there are tougher tests to come still. One game at a time. Just enjoy bouncing into international break.
