Orlando Pirates winger Oswin Appollis has made an honest admission that Mbekezeli Mbokazi's move to Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit Chicago Fire will serve as a motivation for the other players.
The 20-year-old defender has enjoyed a meteoric rise since making his professional debut in March 2025, and he went on to become regular at Bafana Bafana, whom he will represent at AFCON.
Mbokazi, who played his final match for Pirates during the Carling Knockout Cup final against Marumo Gallants last Saturday, has won the MTN8 and the League Cup title with the Soweto giants.
Overall, the center-back made 39 appearances for the club, scored two goals and registered as many assists, and is now set for a spell in America until 2029 with a club option of a further 12 months.
Appollis, who joined Pirates this season, says Mbokazi has earned the stripes to ply his trade abroad and insists other local-based players will be motivated by his transfer story.
“As young as he is - he's a grown man, technical, defending, he has everything and I just want to wish him all the best, he deserves it and I know he will do well at Chicago Fire,” said the former Polokwane City talisman.
"It's a motivation for all the players. I think it took him a year or nine months for him to get a move and he deserves it.
Meanwhile, Pirates now turn their attention to the exhibition match against the Carling All-Stars team at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday - their final match this year.
