Our next World Cup adventure v Al-Hilal

Second match on Sunday in Washington, D.C.

After the vital 2-1 opening win against CF Pachuca, our Red Bulls are to continue their FIFA Club World Cup campaign on Sunday 22 June 2025 against a side from Saudi Arabia. At Audi Field in Washington D. C., we are to face Al-Hilal at 18:00 local time (midnight Austrian time late on Sunday).

If anyone had any doubt that going as Group H leaders into a clash against the Blue Wave would be a huge challenge, the Saudi side's performance against Real Madrid and point in the 1-1 draw proved it. Before the break, in particular, the side coached by Simone Inzaghi were more than a match for the favourites to win the group.

Just like our other two group stage opponents, Al-Hilal have a brand new coach in charge. The 49-year-old Italian only took over the reins from Portugal's Jorge Jesus at the side that finished second in the Saudi Professional League at the start of June. Inzaghi can proudly claim to have led his former club Inter Milan to two UEFA Champions League finals in the past three seasons. A league title with Inter and three cup honours (with Inter and Lazio) are also on his CV, and he is now aiming to inspire the star-studded Saudi side to similar successes.

The squad has become packed with big names due to the investment in recent years in Saudi Arabia from the RIF state fund (majority owner of the club). The results are the likes of Moroccan international goalkeeper Bono, who saved a penalty against Real shortly before the end, Ruben Neves, the 30-year-old Serbian pair of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Aleksandar Mitrovic as well as defensive rock Kalidou Koulibaly. We can expect to face a team in Al-Hilal that are packed with absolutely top players and have made another statement by recruiting Simone Inzaghi, who was twice in the Champions League final in the recent past. With the draw against Real Madrid, in which they definitely weren't second best, they showed that they have huge potential and that it will be a difficult match for us. We are underdogs, but we want to make the most of our chance and know that we are in a good position after starting with a win.

Thomas Letsch

We know that they have a few stars in their squad, but we are a bit like we were before the match against Pachuca, as we don't know exactly who we are facing. They will definitely offer another kind of quality though. The match could be decisive for our hopes of making the last 16.
