Spain delivered a dominant knockout-stage performance, defeating Austria 3-0 at Los Angeles Stadium with Mikel Oyarzabal scoring twice and Pedro Porro adding a header. The European champions extended their World Cup clean sheet streak to four consecutive matches while Austria failed to register a single shot on target across the entire 90 minutes.
Marc Cucurella provided both assists for Oyarzabal's goals, with the left-flank partnership proving decisive in a match Spain controlled from start to finish. Ralf Rangnick's tactical adjustments, including a double-striker substitution at the hour mark, generated no response as Austria exited the tournament. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Spain v Austria.
Oyarzabal delivered a match-winning brace that Austria's defence simply could not handle. His intelligent movement created space throughout, and his finishing proved ruthless when clear-cut opportunities arrived. The forward's double ensured Spain's comfortable progression to the next round.
The opener came in the 36th minute when Oyarzabal converted Cucurella's low cross with a first-time left-footed finish into the far corner. He sealed the victory in the 89th minute, latching onto another Cucurella pass before calmly stroking past Alexander Schlager. Earlier, his shot in the 33rd minute drew an exceptional save.
Beyond his goals, Oyarzabal's pivot play linked midfield and attack effectively, frequently dropping deep to hold the ball under pressure. His combination with Cucurella proved Spain's primary attacking weapon, and his clinical finishing transformed dominance into a decisive three-goal margin that reflected the team's control.
Cucurella produced two decisive assists that bookended Spain's victory. His connection with Oyarzabal down the left corridor was the match's most productive partnership, repeatedly exploiting space that Austria struggled to protect throughout the 90 minutes.
The left-back provided the low cross for Oyarzabal's opener in the 36th minute, then delivered the perfectly weighted through ball for the third goal in the 89th minute. He also had a powerful first-time shot find the net in the 29th minute, only for the goal to be disallowed for a foul.
Cucurella dominated his flank offensively while remaining alert defensively with recoveries and blocks when Austria attempted to counter. His two assists directly accounted for the goals that secured Spain's passage, making him the creative architect of the comfortable victory.
Gregoritsch squandered Austria's best opportunity of the entire match. In the 18th minute, a cross found him unmarked inside the six-yard box, but the striker failed to make proper contact with his header as the ball passed inches wide with the goal gaping.
That missed chance proved costly as Austria never came as close to scoring again. The forward was isolated for long periods due to Spain's territorial dominance, with limited touches and minimal involvement in build-up play before being substituted in the 60th minute for Marko Arnautovic.
Had Gregoritsch converted that early header, Austria would have had a platform to challenge Spain's control. Instead, the miss left his team chasing the match after falling behind, and Rangnick's subsequent tactical changes to introduce aerial threats came too late to alter the outcome.
