Weverton, 38, is no longer seen as an automatic pick at Palmeiras. According to Nosso Palestra, the club are considering a goalkeeper rotation in 2026, with Carlos Miguel expected to start the year.
Weverton has been at the club since 2018 and, for the first time since 2019, is not expected to begin a season as first-choice. After seven years as the undisputed starter, he could lose his place at the start of the campaign.
The proposed rotation would mirror approaches in Europe, alternating goalkeepers by competition, physical condition, recent form and the opponent’s characteristics.
The plan is seen internally as a way to spread minutes, ease fatigue across a congested calendar and keep more players match sharp.
He has just come through his first season under significant scrutiny since joining, yet he retains respect and leadership in the squad. Rotation would represent a gradual transition rather than a definitive demotion.
Carlos Miguel is viewed as the option to assume greater prominence during the year. Palmeiras are moving away from an absolute first-choice model that defined 2019 to 2025, with game allocation to be set by competition and technical calls.
