Palmeiras start Copa do Brasil against Série D side, recent runs

Palmeiras learned last Monday who their opponent will be in the fifth round of the Copa do Brasil, a team that plays in Série D of the Brazilian Championship. The draw held by the CBF determined Jacuipense-BA as Verdão’s rival. The team led by Abel Ferreira will play the first leg at home and the second leg away.

The matches are scheduled to take place between April 22 and May 13. Details will still be defined by the CBF.

This will be Palmeiras’ seventh Copa do Brasil under Abel Ferreira’s management. In 2020, right after taking over the club, the coach made his debut precisely in this competition, in the second leg of the round of 16, the stage that marked the team’s debut in the tournament that year.

Palmeiras’ Recent Campaigns

On that occasion, Verdão was already close to a spot in the quarterfinals after a 3-1 victory over Red Bull Bragantino in the first leg, a match that had assistant coach Andrey Lopes, known as “Cebola,” in charge. In the return leg, Alviverde won 1-0 and secured their place. Later, they became champions by defeating Grêmio in the final.

In 2021, Verdão was eliminated in the third round by CRB, on penalties. The following year, they got past Juazeirense in the third round but were knocked out in the round of 16 by São Paulo, again on penalties. In 2023, they eliminated Tombense (third round) and Fortaleza (round of 16) and were once again eliminated by Tricolor, but this time in the quarterfinals.

In 2024, they were knocked out again in the round of 16. After eliminating Botafogo-SP, they were left behind by Flamengo. Finally, last year, Palmeiras repeated history and fell to Corinthians, also in the round of 16, after getting past Ceará.

Palmeiras in the Copa do Brasil

This is Palmeiras’ 31st appearance in the Copa do Brasil. Champions in 1998, 2012, 2015, and 2020, Palmeiras is the fourth club with the most titles in the competition, behind Grêmio and Flamengo, both with five, and Cruzeiro, with six. In addition to the four titles, Verdão was runner-up in 1996.

In other editions, Palmeiras was stopped four times in the semifinals, nine times in the quarterfinals, nine times in the round of 16, twice in the round of 32, and once in the round of 64.
