Paris police made 141 arrests on Tuesday night after France’s 2-0 World Cup semi-final defeat to Spain. According to the Paris police prefecture, the detentions came on the fringes of match-related gatherings in the capital.
Most arrests were tied to the use of fireworks mortars aimed at police and emergency services. No serious injuries were reported.
On the same date last year, 175 people were detained, notably around Bastille Day festivities.
This year, those celebrations took place on the eve of 14 July because of events marking the 10th anniversary of the Nice attack, which killed 86 people.
Around 7,000 police and gendarmes were deployed on 13 and 14 July to safeguard both occasions.
