Former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim did not hold back when it came to criticising his players in public.

Academy players, his proteges, and stars he signed, the Portuguese did not shy away from taking any names, as Patrick Dorgu will attest to.

The Dane was called out for his lack of composure in the final third.

“He needs to be calmer playing the game,” Amorim had said. You can feel the anxiety every time Patrick touches the ball. I can feel the anxiety. You remember the shot against Everton.

Amorim criticised Patrick Dorgu in public

“That was easier than the decision he had to make [playing for Denmark] against Scotland. He made a great decision, and I saw it when he played in Italy. But here it is different, and sometimes the pressure is hard for them in the beginning, but he has time to improve.”

Maybe this was his method of firing them up, but in the modern age, not many take kindly to this, as seen from the reactions of wonderkids like Chido Obi and Harry Amass.

However, the Denmark international took on board the criticism and even went on to prove the ex-Sporting CP boss wrong.

In fact, he even agreed with the basic assessment, while also pointing out that he did not agree fully with the statement made in public.

Dorgu’s reaction

“I don’t think those were the words he was looking for. But I don’t agree that I’ve been nervous. But I agree that I haven’t played as well as I have with the national team.

“So I haven’t been lying at home and being angry that he criticized me,” Patrick Dorgu told Viaplay (via Bold).

And he has since put in the hard yards, and that shows in his recent performances. registering three goal involvements in the last five games, including one goal and two assists.

And Darren Fletcher’s arrival has certainly helped with the 21-year-old playing with much more freedom. Now for him to continue in the same vein in the weeks to come under the new caretaker boss.
