Ruben Amorim is expected to arrive at Manchester United as head coach with fresh ideas, with the Reds set to take a different direction after dismissing Erik ten Hag last week.
It has been well documented that Amorim favours a back three and it’s fair to say his switch in tactics will benefit some players and perhaps discourage others.
All of the players should be doing their utmost to impress the new head coach, but Amorim should be mindful that many of the current crop have been underperforming for far too long. It will soon be his responsibility to change that for the better.
Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has suggested that Amorim could use Kobbie Mainoo in a more advanced role, which could suit the 19-year-old star.
Speaking after United’s 2-0 win over PAOK in the Europa League, Scholes has told TNT Sports that Mainoo could play as a number 10 in the 3-4-3 formation that Amorim seems to like playing.
He said: “He’s got his two number 10s, which is something you don’t see here. And I think he’s got the players. I think Fernandes is definitely one of them.
“I actually think Mainoo could be one of them as well. I think he’d be a better player, playing higher up as one of the 10s with a bit of security in behind. I think it would suit him more.”

Speaking at his press conference on Friday, interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy admitted that Mainoo is not yet ready to resume training with the rest of the United first-team.
“And Kobbie is also progressing with his injury. He isn’t yet with the team, though.”
Mainoo wasn’t expected to make a return to action until after the November international break. His return will come as a big boost to Ruben Amorim and we’re looking forward to seeing him slot in alongside Manuel Ugarte in midfield.
