Chelsea announced the appointment of Alonso as their new manager earlier this month, with the Spaniard signing a four year contract at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso has a big job on his hands after the Blues missed out on European football after finishing tenth, and some big decisions need to be made in the summer.

Chelsea will need to sell a number of players to not only trim the squad down, but to also raise funds to add reinforcements.

There are doubts over the future of both Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez, whilst supporters would like to see a new goalkeeper signed.

It’s been another mixed season for Sanchez between the sticks, and he was dropped earlier in the season by Liam Rosenior.

Chelsea have youngster Mike Penders who they seem to view as their long term number one, and Scholes has called for Alonso to replace Sanchez.

“I think the goalkeeper is a problem there at Chelsea, he’s a liability,” Nicky Butt told on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.

“He can’t play the way they will want to play.”

Responding to Butt, Scholes said: “With the way Chelsea will play, I agree. He can’t do it.

“I’m pretty sure Xabi Alonso will want to play that way, to build out from the back, so he will need a new goalkeeper then.”

Palmer has struggled this season, but finished the campaign with ten Premier League goals, but a lack of European football could see him consider his future.
