According to Globo.com, Palmeiras forward Paulinho has received a one-match ban for a goal celebration after the STJD prosecutor’s appeal was upheld on Wednesday.

He had been acquitted at first instance, then the case went to the Superior Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva’s Pleno on Wednesday morning.

The incident followed his third goal in a 3-0 win over Flamengo in round 17 at the Maracanã.

He was charged under article 258 of the CBJD, which covers conduct contrary to discipline or sporting ethics not otherwise specified.

Palmeiras argued the gesture was celebratory and directed at their own fans, adding that other players have done the same without punishment.

Rapporteur Mariana Barreiras said the sign is known within football but should not be normalised, and the panel convicted him unanimously.

There is no domestic appeal left. Palmeiras can take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but has not indicated it will.

He will miss Palmeiras’ first match after the World Cup, on Wednesday 22 July, against Coritiba.

The ruling angered figures inside the club, where relations with the STJD were already strained by Abel Ferreira’s punishment. The hierarchy believes the tribunal’s treatment has been uneven, with unprecedented measures targeting only Palmeiras players and staff.
