Peio Canales, the Katxorro de Barrika, arrived in Santander last August to make his name and has done exactly that. The midfielder has honoured his Arredondo roots and won a place in racinguista hearts as promotion celebrations roll on.
As reported by as.com, his final service to the team of the tierruca could be delivering the LaLiga Hypermotion title. Racing need one point to secure top spot against Cádiz at El Sardinero. If Cádiz spring a surprise, Racing can still finish first if Las Palmas take at least a point against Depor, who remain in party mode after promotion.
Canales now returns to Athletic, joining the club’s iconic Los Héroes del 26. It would be a surprise if Edin Terzic, who has tracked him, did not hand him a prominent role at San Mamés next season.
It will be a day of farewells. Pablo Ramón (Espanyol), Damián (Celta) and Manex Lozano (Athletic) go back to their parent clubs, while Jaime Mata and Sangalli reach the end of their deals. Jorge Salinas could depart for a significant fee, and Gustavo Puerta is already with Colombia for the World Cup, so José Alberto is set to rotate and share minutes.
Cádiz also face goodbyes, with four players out of contract. Ocampo, Roger and Lucas are not in the squad, and of that trio only Lucas could stay on. Álex, the club’s emblematic captain, bows out after nine seasons and 307 games, and Idiakez, expected to remain as coach, is set to start him.
