Pelé’s 1958 World Cup final shirt is to be auctioned by Sotheby’s.
According to L'Équipe, the sale is due to conclude on 16 July and estimates suggest it could be worth more than 6 million dollars.
That valuation would rank it among the most expensive match-worn shirts. The record is held by Diego Maradona’s shirt from 22 June 1986 in Mexico against England, which sold for 9.3 million dollars after Argentina’s 2-1 win, featuring two iconic goals, one scored with his hand and allowed by the referee.
Brazil beat France 5-2 in the semi-finals, then defeated hosts Sweden 5-2 in the final, where Pelé scored twice. It was Brazil’s first World Cup triumph and the forward’s first appearance at the tournament.
The number 10 shirt will be briefly displayed during this year’s World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada, which runs from 11 June to 19 July. It will be on view at Sotheby’s new Breuer Building headquarters in Manhattan from 1 July.
The shirt was given to Didi, Pelé’s team-mate and friend, and stayed with his family for decades before moving to a museum. It was first auctioned in 2004, with the price undisclosed.
