Pep Guardiola is facing a rule that currently prevents new Manchester City signing Marc Guéhi from playing the League Cup final against Arsenal at Wembley on 22 March. The defender joined for £20 million (€23m).
According to L'Équipe, a player may represent two clubs in the same edition only if he joins the second before the first leg of the semi-finals. Antoine Semenyo, for instance, played both semi-finals against Newcastle, 2-0 and 3-1, after moving from Bournemouth on nine January.
Guéhi arrived after the first leg, so he could not feature in the return match and, for now, the final is out of bounds.
Guardiola has asked the club to approach the EFL in an effort to have the rule reconsidered. He hopes to convince the organisers that Guéhi can take part in the final.
He expressed frustration at paying a high fee for a player who cannot be selected because of a regulation he says he does not understand.
