Harvey Elliott Edging Towards Leipzig as Liverpool Set Valuation

Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany has reported that RB Leipzig have made Harvey Elliott their top target as they prepare for life without Xavi Simons. According to Plettenberg, “Harvey Elliott is RB Leipzig’s top target to replace Xavi Simons, who is set to move to Chelsea after the Bundesliga opener against FC Bayern.”

It is understood that Leipzig have already agreed personal terms with the 22-year-old Liverpool playmaker, and attention now turns to a fee. Liverpool are believed to be open to a sale should an offer in the region of £45 million arrive, reflecting both Elliott’s potential and the investment required following the arrival of Florian Wirtz at Anfield.

Elliott’s Situation at Liverpool

Elliott endured a frustrating 2024–25 campaign, struggling for regular minutes under Arne Slot. Despite Liverpool’s title-winning season, the England youth international was often reduced to cameo appearances. With Wirtz now joining a stacked midfield that already includes Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones, Elliott’s pathway appears increasingly blocked.

Why Leipzig View Elliott as Simons’ Successor

Leipzig’s admiration for Elliott stems not only from his technical ability but also his versatility. He can operate as a right-sided midfielder, in a central creative role or drifting in from the wing. Plettenberg emphasised, “Leipzig have agreed personal terms with the 22 y/o playmaker Elliott.” This suggests serious intent to make him the cornerstone of their attacking rebuild.

The Bundesliga side are pragmatic sellers, but equally shrewd when it comes to acquisitions. Simons’ imminent move to Chelsea leaves a creative void. Elliott, at £45 million, would represent a significant outlay, yet Leipzig believe the England under-21 international could be their next long-term star.

Liverpool’s Willingness to Negotiate

Liverpool’s position appears pragmatic. With Wirtz secured and depth in midfield already established, they see Elliott as a valuable but expendable asset. Club insiders feel the fee discussed would represent good business for a player unlikely to feature heavily next season.

Slot’s focus is now on shaping a balanced squad for Champions League and domestic challenges. A sale would also provide funds for reinforcements elsewhere, particularly at full-back and in attack following the tragic loss of Diogo Jota this summer.

What is clear is that Elliott’s story at Liverpool may be approaching its conclusion. Leipzig sense an opportunity and are prepared to act decisively.

Our View – Anfield Index Analysis

This report feels both inevitable and bittersweet. Harvey Elliott was long seen as one of the brightest academy graduates since Trent Alexander-Arnold, yet his career at Anfield never truly ignited under Arne Slot. Last season he barely featured and when chances came, they often felt token rather than integral.

If Leipzig are serious, £45 million represents an offer the club cannot realistically refuse. Wirtz is younger, already world class, and signed to be a game-changer. With Mac Allister and Szoboszlai already operating at high levels, there is simply no room for Elliott to progress here.

Supporters will wish him well if this move materialises. Leipzig have a proven track record in developing and re-launching young players’ careers. Watching him succeed in Germany would be far preferable to seeing him stagnate on the bench at Anfield.

Of course, there is sadness. Elliott loved playing for Liverpool and carried himself with maturity beyond his years. His bond with fans was genuine, and many will recall his early flashes of brilliance with warmth. Yet football is often ruthless. This feels like a decision shaped by logic more than emotion.
