The attempt to lure Alejandro Garnacho to Napoli fell apart not only because they couldn’t agree to a fee with Manchester United, which demanded a conspicuous amount of money, but also and especially because of his contractual requests, Tuttomercatoweb reports.
As director Giovanni Manna confirmed, the attacker would have been one of the highest-paid players in the squad had the Azzurri accepted his demands. In the end, they preferred not to alter the balance of their locker room.
Antonio Conte had ndicated Garnacho as his top target to replace Khvicha Kvaratshkelia at Napoli. However, the financial parameters superseded the technical matters in this case. The Partenopei have always been careful with their payroll. The exception they made for Victor Osimhen last year proved very costly.
Following the temporary departure of the Nigerian striker, they have the fifth wages bill in Serie A behind Inter, Juventus, Milan, and Roma. They weren’t looking to make it balloon. The Georgian star had a very low salary, which was a big factor in his departure. They were willing to hand him rich wages but didn’t want to do the same with a newcomer.
The Azzurri would have had to pay Argentine €5M net annually, plus €6M commission for his agents and the intermediaries.
The age of the player was perhaps a factor too, as they gave that sum to Romelu Lukaku. It would have been hard to keep him for a few years, as a renewal with its natural pay bump would have been nearly impossible from that starting point. While they had their reasons, the error was not to move on sooner given the big obstacles.
