Peter Reid returned to Wearside on Saturday, 6 June, to begin celebrating his 70th at a packed Roker Hotel. According to Sunderland Echo, the former Sunderland manager turns 70 on 20 June.
The evening mixed laughter and nostalgia as friends, team-mates and former players saluted his impact. Kevin Phillips and Micky Gray led tributes, while Chris Kamara recalled their long friendship and Goals on Sunday partnership.
Video messages arrived from former Black Cats boss Tony Mowbray and England great Peter Shilton, with Teesside comic Roy Chubby Brown reminiscing about Reid’s Yarm years. There were tender nods to his Everton devotion and his bond with the late Bradley Lowery.
A rousing moment came when he entered to Cheer Up Peter Reid, the room stood and sang to deliver a thunderous welcome.
Reid described the night as an emotional rollercoaster, saying it brought laughter, vivid memories and moments that moved him. He shared a supporter’s story that touched him, spoke of Sunderland’s place in his heart after seven years in charge, and thanked fans for an unforgettable occasion.
His weekend also included a visit to former assistant Bobby Saxton, and a presentation from host Paul Goffy Gough of a Sunderland-themed cake, champagne and a framed photo montage marking his years at the club.
