GK Robin Roefs, six. Little chance with any of the goals and he made some strong saves. He was fortunate early on after missing a corner, Onana headed against the bar.

RB Nordi Mukiele, six. His aggressive positioning unsettled Villa and he competed typically well, but he was not at his best on the ball.

CB Luke O'Nien, five. This was probably his toughest test yet against the outstanding Ollie Watkins, he struggled to contain him and survived a few awkward moments. He could do little about the early goals.

CB Omar Alderete, seven. A very solid display, used the ball well and won key defensive headers. He was withdrawn just after the hour and appeared to be hobbling, which might concern Sunderland.
