Philippe Diallo has written to referees to address concerns over the French Football Federation’s withdrawal from a defamation complaint against Pablo Longoria, reiterating his backing for match officials and detailing protective measures.
According to L'Équipe, the referees’ union SAFE wrote to Diallo on 20 December expressing surprise at the FFF stepping back from a joint complaint with the LFP filed on 12 May after Longoria’s outburst following OM’s 3-0 defeat at Auxerre in February 2025. Diallo replied on 10 January. SAFE also lodged its own complaint and some officials said they felt abandoned, with a few considering action.
In his letter, Diallo said protecting and valuing referees is the federation’s top priority. He cited extra resources for the refereeing department, the rollout of individual body cameras and tougher disciplinary scales for violence against officials.
Explaining why the FFF did not confirm its complaint, Diallo argued a second consignation was unnecessary for the same filing. He added that, despite steps taken, the dean of judges did not authorise the FFF to consign again. The wording suggests the federation tried to revive the case after stepping back, but authorisation was refused with the FFF deemed out of time.
Previously, the FFF viewed the 15-match suspension handed to Longoria by the LFP’s disciplinary commission as proportionate and appropriate. An FFF executive committee meets on Thursday, and while the matter is not on the agenda, it could be raised, with several members having questioned the decision.
