Ratings

Dermot Mee – 7 – Started the match with a big save and made a couple more throughout. Had one shaky moment with a bad pass out from the back which he was lucky to get away with but in general did well with the ball in some tricky situations. Capped off the match with a perfect Manuel Neuer-esque clearance 40 yards out of his goal.

Yuel Helafu – 6 – A tough match up in just his second appearance at u21s level, the 17 year old can hold his head up high with a decent performance. Looked at his best when he ventured infield to combine with the midfield and form an overload. This did leave the right side exposed at times though and a few poorly executed passes were lucky not to be punished.

Jacob Devaney – 8.5 – A rock at the back, the match could have gone very differently if it weren’t for him. Two vital goal line clearances are the highlights of a stellar performance which saw him doing it all. He swept up at the back covering both fullbacks but also defended on the front foot by stepping into midfield with aggressive tackles. He was just as impressive on the ball as well; naturally a midfielder, he showed a great passing range with a few perfectly weighted passes into the channels.

Dan Armer – 6.5 – Composed on the ball, he helped Leon throughout the game by offering an option and keeping it simple on the left side of the back.

Diego Leon – 7.5 – His best performance in a red shirt so far since signing for the club. Capped it with an incredible goal, shrugging off multiple defenders as he dribbled 50 yards and finished 1 on 1 with the keeper off his weaker foot. Not just the outrageous though, he was a lot more composed in his general play compared to previous matches. That included keeping it simple under pressure to retain possession and holding his position at the correct times.

Tyler Fletcher – 6.5 – Covered a lot of ground mopping up in midfield but will be disappointed to have not dealt with the Spurs goal better. He tried to be too cute when he should have just cleared the ball.

Jayce Fitzgerald – 7 – Linked well with Lacey when he pushed into the right inside channel and was dangerous when he found space to drive into from midfield.

Shea Lacey – 7.5 – A great first half performance, he pulled the strings early on with a great selection of passes. Whether it was a cross field ball, a reverse pass down the right, or a cross into the box, he consistently found a red shirt including the assist for Biancheri’s first goal. An awkward fall saw him pick up a shoulder injury, forcing him off in the second half, but it is hopefully not serious.

Jack Fletcher – 7.5 – Comes away with an assist but easily could have had more and a goal of his own. Had an effort cleared off the line in the first half and his free kick delivery later on should have been turned in by either Obi or Biancheri before he ultimately got his deserved assist with a great connection with Biancheri.

James Scanlon – 7 – His movement on the left wing was very good and saw him find space in behind his fullback but just lacked the extra pace to take full advantage of it at times. Moved to the right wing later on where he delivered some very dangerous crosses.

Gabriele Biancheri – 9.5 – The hat-trick hero, it would be hard to have a better performance. Scoring three goals and assisting the other, he executed his moves perfectly throughout the 90 minutes as both a number nine and a left winger. His first goal showed a top level of skill to take down the ball centrally under the pressure of two defenders before finishing. But his second goal displayed perhaps his greatest strength, being an option at the top of the box. His elite hold up play brought others into the play around box which ultimately he finished off with his quick movement. It was this hold up play which started the move for Leon’s wonder goal before getting his hat-trick with more elusive movement in the box.

Substitutes

Chido Obi – 6 – Lively off the bench but got caught narrowly offside on a couple of occasions. Thought he had the easiest goal of his life at the back post but the ball bounced off the crossbar before he could get his head to it.

Bendito Mantato – 6 – Beat for pace by Yusuf Akhamrich once but made sure to win the ball with a hard challenge the next time.

Jayden Ngwashi – 6 – Slotted in for the final moments with composed passing. Featured image Lewis Storey via Getty Images
