The Match

It was a timid and error-strewn first 15 minutes from Monaco, who, as soon as they found their feet, got on the scoresheet. It was the in-form Balogun who was in the right place at the right time to latch onto a loose ball in the box and finish past Grégoire Coudert on the half-volley. Maghnes Akliouche should have doubled the lead soon after, but from close-range, he completely fluffed the volleyed finish, kneeing wide.

Éric Junior Dina Ebimbe should have dragged his side level moments later, however, but his flick on was too deft to find the target, but significant enough to take it away from Ludovic Ajorque, who was steaming in behind him.

Monaco struggled to give themselves a cushion at the second-half, inciting Sébastien Pocognoli to make attacking changes, despite their lead. The Belgian was clearly desperate for a second goal… and he got it. Mika Biereth made the run in behind and his ball across goal found Mamadou Coulibaly. He fluffed his finish but put it on a plate for Aleksandr Golovin to fire into the roof of the net.

Brest never truly pushed to get back into the game, only registering their first shot on target in the 82nd minute. A professional job from Les Monégasques, whose eight-game unbeaten run in the league has them back in the race for European football.

Monaco player ratings

Lukas Hradecky – 4

Wout Faes – 7

One of Faes’ most assured performances since arriving on loan from Leicester City. The defender was heavily involved and used the ball well when it was at his feet. He was a presence in both boxes and made numerous important headed clearances.

Denis Zakaria – 5

Thilo Kehrer – 4

Simon Adingra – 5

Aladji Bamba – 6

Lamine Camara – 7

The stats underline how important Camara is to this Monaco team. The difference in the win percentage with him in the team compared to when he isn’t there is dramatic. He brought assurance to Monaco’s midfield, bite, and ball progression. A faultless performance from the Senegal international.

Jordan Teze – 5

Aleksandr Golovin – 6

Folarin Balogun – 7

Excellent as he has been almost all season. He had the striker’s instincts to be in the right place to take his goal and outmuscled Brest’s defenders throughout. The former Arsenal man has become a much more complete forward this season and one so valuable to his team.

Maghnes Akliouche – 6

Selected Brest player ratings

Ludovic Ajorque – 4

As he always is, Ajorque was a menace in the air, winning eight of his nine aerial duels, but he struggled to really have an impact on this match and his frustration subsequently grew as the match progressed.

Kamory Doumbia – 4

Éric Junior Dina Ebimbe – 4

Brendan Chardonnet – 6

Joris Chotard – 6
